Françoise Estrier on Managerial Courage

Françoise Estrier never thought about becoming a manager. Yet, here she was, captivating an audience about her journey to becoming Senior Manager at the Pôle Bioligie of CHU (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire) in Toulouse.

She spoke of “managerial courage” to a packed house at WS Interactive on Thursday, February 6, 2020. Lydie Lasserre of the Growing Action Committee organized the event.

Estrier started as a lab technician. As the eldest of four, Estrier is tenacious and committed. These qualities translate to high standards and commitment in healthcare. Early on, she had vision, with the ability to convey it and convince her colleagues. Along her career path, Estrier found mentors who helped her navigate to management positions.

The qualities of a courageous manager she espouses include: listening, giving people opportunities, recognizing talent, providing guidance, and living your values. In addition, it’s important to make your voice heard while respecting others. This makes it possible to embrace the complimentary roles of men and women in the workplace in a field that is not conducive to it.

In a lively Q&A, audience members shared their experiences. Estrier stressed the importance of transferring know-how to prepare the next generation for leadership roles.
